Novartis' mission is to discover, develop and market innovative, proprietary medicines and therapies. The business focuses on the three leading divisions: Pharmaceuticals, Ophthalmology and Generics. In addition, Novartis attaches great importance to social responsibility and environmental protection, as demonstrated by numerous projects.
The company employs some 109,000 associates from 149 nations worldwide. In Switzerland, 12,200 of them work at the eight sites in Basel, Fribourg, Geneva, Locarno, Rotkreuz, Schweizerhalle, Stein and Zurich. In addition, Novartis trains some 300 apprentices each year and employs a similarly high number of interns, doctoral candidates and postdocs.
According to a market value analysis by the "Handelsblatt", Novartis was among the 30 most valuable companies in the world in 2011. According to IMS-PADDS, Novartis is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies worldwide in terms of global drug sales.
